Eco-Products PLA Plastic Products Do Not Contain BPA

Overview

The subject of “7-OTHER” plastics (and specifically “7-OTHER” plastics containing Bisphenol-A or BPA) has been a regular topic in the news media as of late. In an effort to help our customers understand the issue completely, we have drafted a statement in the hope of clarifying the absolute safety of every product we produce and sell.

Resin Coding System

The resin identification symbol system, also known as the material container coding system, was created by The Society of Plastics Industry (SPI) in 1988. At that time, the overwhelming majority of plastic packaging was made with one of six resins: polyethylene terepthalate (PET or PETE), high density polyethylene (HDPE), vinyl (polyvinyl chloride or PVC), low density polyethylene (LDPE), polypropylene (PP), or polystyrene (PS). The SPI accounts for these six resin types, assigning each a number from 1 to 6 as a uniform, nationwide and international voluntary labeling system. The SPI coding system also includes a seventh code, identified as “7-OTHER”. This code is used when the product in question is made with a resin other than one of the six outlined above. The plastic industry has evolved, and many new plastics and bio-plastics have emerged since 1988. A growing number of plastics and plastic packaging do not meet the specific criteria to be labeled 1 through 6 and must be labeled with the generic code of “7-OTHER.” All PLA based plastics, including Eco-Products’ deli containers, Food trays, clear clamshells, (PLA) cutlery, straws, cold cups and lids, soup containers, and portion cups are classified as “7-OTHER”.

Misconception About BPA in Corn Plastics

Some of the plastics grouped in the “7-OTHER” category are polycarbonate based, which means they contain a substance called Bisphenol-A, or BPA. Studies have shown that trace amounts of BPA are leaching from polycarbonate containers into foods and liquids. While there is much more research to be done, it is crucial to note that because our products are made from plants and not oil, all of our products are BPA free.
