A Bold and Much-Needed Vision for a Plastics System that Works
Posted by Eco-Products on Jan 23rd 2017
Last April, we devoted the better part of this Dish post to how the New Plastics Economy report articulated the environmental challenges of plastics in stark terms and laid out a high-level approach to reimagining the plastics industry. Their latest report, released at the recent World Economic Forum, builds upon the first report by laying out an action plan to dramatically and profitably increase plastics recycling from today’s rate of 14% to 70%. Their recommendation for how to best recover foodservice packaging? Use compostable packaging and expand the infrastructure to process it. Not only does this avoid concerns recyclers have with food contamination, it also diverts food scraps from landfills and therefore addresses climate change. This report validates the systems solution we have been advocating and helping customers achieve, as well as our work to push for greater access to commercial composting. It is reassuring to know we are well-positioned to be part of the report’s envisioned future.
