Heads up! Changes are coming to BPI Certification Requirements

As of December 31, 2019, the Biodegradable Products Institute (BPI) will no longer certify products that have more than 100 parts per million (PPM) of total fluorine as commercially compostable. Fluorinated compounds that are part of the PFAS* family are widely used in molded fiber foodservice packaging (including ours and our competitors’) to provide grease resistance. Rest assured, the fluorinated compounds used in Eco-Products items have all been FDA approved. However, as of January 1, 2020, our traditional molded fiber products (sugarcane, wheat straw, Dahlia) will no longer be BPI certified. As part of our commitment to industry leadership and choice, we have developed a new line of sugarcane products – called Vanguard^™ – that does not rely on fluorinated chemistry to provide grease resistance. Vanguard products have been verified by a third-party laboratory to have less than 100 PPM of total fluorine, and these products have been certified as commercially compostable by BPI. The initial line is in use with select customers, with more shapes and sizes to be coming soon. If BPI certification is important to you, ask your Eco-Products rep about Vanguard.
