Big Green News from the Big Apple

The New York City council passed regulations that would ban foam foodservice containers and require large restaurants, grocery stores and caterers to compost their food waste.
The composting measure will take effect July 1, 2015.
Dart Container Corporation lobbied against the foam ban, so in a compromise, the city gave the company one year to prove that dirty foam containers can be recycled. If Dart doesn’t sufficiently prove the recyclability of used foam by January 1, 2015, the ban will go into effect July 1, 2015.
While no diversion estimates have been released, these are both big steps for any city, and for a city the size of New York these measures could have a huge impact.
