Don’t Take Our Word For It: Third Party Studies Make the Case for Compostable Packaging

Compost packaging and food scraps

We are passionate about the role compostable packaging can play in keeping food out of landfills, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and supporting a more vibrant planet. And we get REALLY excited when third-party studies back us up. Check out these slides for an overview of some compelling reports that make the case for why our compostable GreenStripe® products can play an important role in foodservice operator sustainability efforts.

Here’s the skinny:

  • Farm Aid study: By using only compostable packaging and providing compost bins in front-of-house (FOH), this festival more than doubled the amount of food scraps it composted (compared to only composting back-of-house food scraps).
  • Eco-Cycle study:
    • Food scraps and napkins made up at least 56 percent of the contents of composting bins in a variety of restaurant types, contrary to the belief that FOH collections are mostly packaging.
    • Compostable packaging and durables were the most effective approaches to capturing food scraps, where close to 100% of food scraps capture can be achieved with minimal contamination.
  • Biodegradable Products Institute/Foodservice Packaging Institute study: Compostable packaging is an effective feedstock in compost piles, just like wood chips or yard trimmings.
  • University of Washington Waste Characterization study: The organics stream was 57% food scraps and 40% compostable packaging. Compostable foodservice packaging almost doubled the weight of material sent to composting.

Starting to sound a lot like best practice to us.
