Carbon Offsets and Eco-Products
Posted by Eco-Products on Oct 28th 2011
Here at Eco-Products we offset the carbon that is generated from our business operations and our overseas shipping. While we can change our behavior and reduce our impacts to a large degree, there are still things like business travel, heating/cooling energy, and transportation needs that we can not eliminate, but are nonetheless activities that create a lot of carbon. Carbon created by our activities (like burning fuels) causes global climate change, which is impacting us all. So we use carbon offsets to reduce the impact that the planet feels from these necessary business activities.
The great thing about offsets these days are the amazing options we have. Instead of simply paying a fee to an offset company and getting a certificate in the mail, we chose to work with NativeEnergy, a Burlington VT based company that finds incredible opportunities to use our offset money in ways that do more than simply neutralize carbon. NativeEnergy finds projects in parts of the country where it can be hard to finance carbon-friendly upgrades to small businesses or communities. Then they use these offset funds to create sustainable projects that not only offset carbon, but also build sustainable communities.
So Eco-Products goes through the extensive process of accounting for our carbon impacts and then we pay NativeEnergy a price (based on the value of carbon). NativeEnergy uses this cash to support carbon neutralizing projects like biogas converters in small farms, wind turbines on Native American reservations, and landfill gas power sources for companies that normally connect to the city gas line for power. These projects are amazing and they really show that with a little extra investment from forward-thinking companies, the green economy is not only feasible, it is profitable and helps communities in ways well beyond cost savings.
